Their contact with the common prisoners at the time is an important part of the history of violence in which the country stands today. “Almost Brothers” ("Quase Dois Irmãos") shows how the intimate relation and the established conflict between these two worlds created the Red Command, which later came to dominate the drug trafficking throughout the country.

Through two characters, Miguel, an intellectualized middle-class young man, political prisoner in Ilha Grande and today a member of Congress, and Jorge, the son of a samba composer that from a small burglar turns out becoming one the leaders of the Red Command, the film has as background the Brazilian political history of the last 50 years, larded by popular music, the link point between these two worlds. Today, a new encounter: Miguel has a daughter who is fascinated by the slums and transgression, and dates a young drug dealer. A new cycle begins.

More information on the movie website »

Awards

Rio Festival, 2004
Best Director – Lúcia Murat
Best Actor – Flávio Bauraqui
Fipresci Award (Federação Internacional de Críticos) – Best Latin American Film

Amazonas film festival 2004
Best movie

Festival de Havana 2004
Edition
Sound tracking

Marseille Festival 2005
Melhor filme do público
Prêmio especial do Júri

Mar Del Plata Festival 2005
Melhor filme do juri popular
Melhor filme ibero-americano do juri

Paris Brazilian Festival 2005
People´s choice

Belém Festival 2005
Script – Lucia Murat e Paulo Lins
Supporting role actor – Babu Santana
Supporting role actress – Maria Flor

Brasilian Miami film Festival 2005
Sound – Naná Vasconcelos

Huelva Festival 2005
Radio de España Award
Jury´s Special Award

Associação Paulista dos críticos de Arte 2005
Best script – Lucia Murat e Paulo Lins

The Foreign Press 2005
Nominated for Best film, Best director, Best script and Best actor
Associação dos Correspondentes Estrangeiros 2005

Official selection

Toronto Film Festival – 2004
Montreal Film festival – 2004
Festival do Rio – 2004
Mostra de São Paulo – 2004
Festival de Biarritz – 2004
Festial de Havana – 2004
Festival de Palm Springs – 2005
Festival de Créteil – 2005
San Francisco International Film Festival – 2005
Seattle International Film Festival – 2005
Festival de Lima – 2005
Festival de Valdivia – 2005
Festival de Quito – 2005
London Film Festival – 2005
Helsink Film Festival – 2005
Meinheim Film Festival – 2005
Haifa Film Festival
Melbourne film Festival

Créditos

Elenco por ordem de entrada em cena

Brunno Abrahão
Silvia Buarque
Werner Shünemann
Luiz Melodia
Fernando Eiras
Antônio Pompêo
Caco Ciocler
Fernando Alves Pinto
Paulo Hamiltonn
Bruce Gomlevsky
Flávio Bauraqui
Maria Flor
Marieta Severo
Jerusa Franco
Charles Fricks
Jandir Ferrari
Tonico Pereira
Lucia Alves
Renato de Souza
Erick Oliveira
Babu Santana

Argumento, produção e direção: Lucia Murat
Produção: Taiga Filmes
Co-produção: Ceneca Producciones (Chile) e TS Productions (França)
Diretor de fotografia: Jacob SoliTrenick
Produção executiva: Ailton Franco Jr. e Branca Murat
Roteiro: Lucia Murat e Paulo Lins
Montagem: Mair Tavares
Edição de som: Simone Petrillo
Som direto: Silvio Da-Rin
Mixagem: Emanuek Croset
Música: Naná Vasconcelos
Co-produtores: Adrian Sólar, Milena Polyo, Giles Sacuto
Direção de Produção: René Bittencourt
Diretor de arte: Luiz Henrique Pinto
Figurino: Inês Salgado
Edição de som: Simone Petrillo, Jose Moreau Louzeiro

On the 70’s, Brazil lived under a military dictatorship, when many political prisoners were incarcerated in a penitentiary in Ilha Grande, located on the coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
