Synopsis
“The hinterland of Our Memories” is a documentary that revisits, with the help of survivors, the assassination of Captain Carlos Lamarca, considered public enemy number one of the Brazilian dictatorship, in the scrubland of Bahia, along with José Campos Barreto (Zequinha), a resident of the region. Presented in the official history as an unknown peasant, Zequinha was in fact a commander of the Osasco strike in 1968 and later joined the armed struggle.
Surprisingly, we see that after years of forgetting and fear, the towns where the tragedy took place now hold a mass and a pilgrimage in homage to Lamarca and Zequinha, with September 17, the date of their deaths, being a holiday in the two main towns where the events occurred, Pintada and Brotas de Macaúbas .
The film is structured as a road movie, starting from Rio de Janeiro, with the three survivors, now around 80 years old, and the filming crew traveling in two cars in search of this memory and of the present-day reality.
