The beginning of the end

Lamarca was the public enemy number 1 of the dictatorship. An army captain considered an excellent marksman and military officer, he had abandoned the barracks in 1969 with a truck full of weapons and joined the VPR. In 1971, already with the MR8, he decided to go to Bahia. A series of setbacks caused this trip to end up being detected by the repression. In a camp behind the house of Zequinha's father, Lamarca settled while Yara continued on to Salvador. The letters he wrote to her were intercepted in Rio de Janeiro and showed that he was in Bahia.

Invasion

Piecing together the data from Lamarca's diary with other information, a team led by chief inspector Fleury, linked to the death squad and who had made a name for himself as a torturer of political prisoners, arrived in Buriti Cristalino on August 28. This invasion is recounted in detail in the film by the only survivor, Olderico Barreto, Zequinha's brother. Buriti is today an abandoned town. Residents who were present are also interviewed and recount that they were even forced to work for the repression. Zequinha's father, a highly respected person in the region, was hung for days in the bandstand in the center of the small town. The film also features an interview with him: old Zé Barreto, filmed some years ago by a filmmaker from Brasília. Everyone in the small town was threatened with death if they did not cooperate.

With the shootout in Buriti, Lamarca and Zequinha fled toward Ibotirama, on the banks of the São Francisco River. This flight on foot made Lamarca very ill, and in the final days Zequinha even carried him on his back. This route is retraced in the film. Detected in Ibopirama, they returned to the region of Brotas de Macaúbas. In all, they walked about 300 kilometers on foot. Until, surrounded by the military led by Colonel Nilton Cerqueira, they were assassinated on the outskirts of Pintada.
