The legend and the memorial
Lamarca was buried in the Campo Santo cemetery of Salvador, in a grave with a number, but without a name. His death was followed by a communiqué from the director of the Federal Censorship to all media outlets, on September 22, 1971: "By order of the President of the Republic, any publication about Carlos Lamarca is hereby suspended as of the present date, throughout the country. I clarify that any reference would favor the creation of a myth or distortion, fostering an image of a martyr that would harm the interests of national security."
Living memory
The Memorial of the Martyrs was built with funds from the Kant World Citizen Prize, awarded in 2009 by the German foundation to friar Luiz Flávio Cappio, now bishop of the Diocese of Barra, who is interviewed in the documentary, and also celebrates the mass at the memorial on September 17, the day of the assassinations. That day is a holiday both in Pintada and in Brotas de Macaúbas.
