Synopsis (Portuguese)

Stela, a young Brazilian actress, decides work on the letters exchanged between Latin American visual artists during the 1970s and 1980s. She travels to Cuba, Mexico, Argentina and Chile in search of works and testimonies, the reality they lived during the dictatorships that most of these countries faced at the time. Amid the investigation, Stela discovers the existence of Ana, a young Brazilian woman who was part of this world, but disappeared. In 1968, Ana went from the south of Brazil, from a small town in the countryside, to the effervescent Buenos Aires, which was experiencing a moment of change in visual arts and behavior. Obsessed with the character, Stela decides to find her and find out what happened to her.

Note from the director

“Ana” can be called a “fakedocumentary”, in which fiction and reality are mixed. The film is based on the concept expressed by Virginia Woolf in her book “A ceiling all yours”, that fiction may contain more truth than the facts.

The film aims to provide an overview of Latin American women artists in the 70s and 80s and, through Stela, establish a connection with today’s world. “Ana” could be called a hybrid, because at the same time that it presents itself in the aesthetic proposal as a documentary, and has in all the artists of the 70s and 80s real figures well known and important in their countries, it also proposes a fictional narrative . This narrative is expressed through Stela, who will be represented by an actress. This proposal, despite working with some references (works such as Sweet and Lowdown (1999), by Woody Allen, with Sean Penn, Incidentat Loch Ness (2004), with Werner Herzog, Forgotten Silver (1995), by Peter Jackson, among others ), invests in its own language and in the search for Latin American references. He works with drama, and brings up issues such as the role of women, the political reality of the continent, the situation of the visual arts, which distinguishes him from these reference films, which in general bet on comedy. It can also be thought of as a road-movie (even if the road is aerial), since Stela is looking for her obsessions in several countries.

With regard to the works of art by the fictional character Ana, we are working with a young Brazilian artist. As for the interviews, we will both use real characters who speak of their times as well as actresses representing characters who can establish a connection with the fictional part of the film.
